While addressing an audience at the Grand Designs Live exhibition, Mr Boles acknowledged the efforts of Bristol City Council, who have pledged to encourage individuals who wish to self-build their property. He said: “We urgently need to build more homes, and now is the time for councils to act and earmark areas that encourage people to buy a plot of land and get a builder to build them a home.
He appealed for more councils to take this on board, and strive to make public land available for local people wishing to build their own homes.

In Austria, 80% of homes are self-build, while in Germany and Belgium the figure is 50% with the UK falling far short of this and containing the lowest number of self-build homes in Europe.  UK councils and companies within the industry who make concerted efforts to enable self-building, will be supported and showcased by the Government.
