Air Source Heat Pumps
Air Source Heat Pumps are at the forefront of the next generation of energy saving technology. Multi Building Services Ltd install Air Source Heat Pumps as an integral part of home renovation projects.
Air Source Heat Pumps use low grade latent heat energy from the outside air and convert it into high grade energy which can be used to heat air or water where it is needed. Through the use of energy efficient heat exchange technology, Air Source Heat Pumps work effectively at temperatures as low as -10C making them the ideal product for the British climate.
Air Source Heat Pumps - Renewable Energy Source
Air Source Heat Pumps are classified by the EU as a renewable energy source because they create more energy than they use. Typically, for every 1kW of electricity used, an Air Source Heat Pump will generate around 3-4kW or useable heat energy.
In judging the efficiency of a heating system, it is important to look at two measures.
- The Coefficient of Performance
The CoP measures the energy efficiency of a heating system on any given day.
- The Seasonal Coefficient of Performance
The Seasonal Coefficient Performance is a measure of the energy efficiency of a heating system over the entire year.
Not surprisingly, the efficiency of Air Source Heat Pumps is dependent to some degree on the temperature of the ambient air. Put simply, on a warmer day, the Heat Pump will work more efficiently.
Multi Building Services Ltd installs Air Source Heat Pumps manufactured by technology leaders Samsung. Samsung Monobloc Air Source Heat Pumps provide a CoP of 4.35 and a SCoP of 3.5. To put this in real perspective, Samsung Air Source Heat Pumps continue to work at 90% efficiency at temperatures as low as -10C.
Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS)
The energy efficient Air Source Heat Pumps supplied and installed by Multi Building Services Ltd, are eligible for the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). This is one of a number of schemes supported by the government in an effort to promote the use of renewable energy across the board. The MCS is intended to ensure continuing high standards where green technology such as ASHP's are concerned, whether its the quality of product or the reputation of installers. The scheme is backed by the Department of Energy and Climate Change which is also committed to widespread use of renewable energy.
Financial incentives like this include the Renewable Heat Incentive and the Feed-in Tariff, geared towards limiting carbon emissions. Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme
The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (Domestic RHI) is a government financial incentive to promote the use of renewable heat. Switching to heating systems that use naturally replenished energy can help the UK reduce its carbon emissions.
Air Source Heat Pumps are included in the list of eligible products for the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive scheme.

Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme
A measure of the success of the Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme within the domestic arena, is the recent government announcement regarding an increase in tariff rates from spring 2017. The rate increases have been set by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), and relate to 3 renewable heating technology types. These are new air source heat pumps [ASHP], ground source heat pumps [GSHP] and biomass systems. Anybody applying on or after 14th December 2016 will be eligible for the new rates.
New Tariff RatesBiomass – Current: 4.21p Uplifted: 6.44p
Air Source – Current: 7.51p Uplifted: 10.02p
Ground Source – Current: 19.33p Uplifted: 19.55p
Heat Demand Limits
Heat demand limits are to be imposed on the domestic RHI scheme by the BEIS, ensuring that a set yearly limit of financial support is not exceeded. The limits are: -
There will be no heat demand limit for solar thermal.
Samsung Domestic Eco Heat Systems
To maximise energy efficient heating, Samsung have developed a range of Eco Heating Systems designed for every environment.
EHS Mono Air Source Heating System
The Samsung Monobloc 16kW is the most cost effective heating system for most domestic purposes. The Samsung Mono installed by Multi Building Services Ltd is an air-to-water system, converting latent heat into useable hot water at temperatures of up to 60°C. This is more than adequate for most domestic hot water and central heating requirements.
The Samsung Mono can be linked to an existing hot water storage tank or – for closer and more efficient control – Multi Building Services Ltd can install a Samsung cylinder unit which integrates a hot water tank with the control kit, water pump, 2-way valves, air vent, relief valve, RF receiver, wireless thermostat and wired remote control.
EHS Split Air Source Heating System
Like the Mono, the Samsung Split Air Source Heating System is an air-to-water system providing hot water, central heating and underfloor heating. The Split incorporates an optional base plate heater, solar panels and a hydro unit.
EHS TDM Air Source Heating System
The Samsung TDM works as both an air-to-water heat system and an air-to-air heat exchange system. The air-to-water unit TDM provides controllable hot water and central heating. The air-to-air facility will also provide warm air during cold weather and – by inverting the condenser/compressor cycle – it will act as an air conditioning system during hot weather. Samsung’s TDM heating system is ideal for homeowners wanting complete climate control throughout the year.
Air Source Heat Pumps – Recent Installation
We recently installed an air source heat pump heating system in a 2 bedroom bungalow in Weston Colville, near New Market, Cambridgeshire. The property is in a very rural location, with no access to mains gas. The householders are concerned about the cost of oil fired heating and are keen to minimise their carbon footprint. They were delighted when we showed the cost calculations for the air source heating option.
We installed Samsung Monobloc outdoor units for this air source heat pump project. The system has low installation and running costs and the plan is that it will eventually be powered by solar roof panels.
Commercial Air Source Heating Systems
Samsung domestic air source heat pumps are compact and efficient. In most cases they are ideal for use in multi-occupancy buildings including apartment blocks and house conversions, and can be adapted to use in shops, bars and restaurants.
Samsung have now introduced a range of Air Source Heating Systems for use in office buildings and industrial premises.
